Racing at LHYC

Throughout the summer months the club runs a number of friendly informal races.

Most weekends when there are suitable tides there are Top of the Tide races using 3 different courses in Halstow and Stangate Creeks depending on the conditions. The race is run using the Portsmouth Yardstick Handicap System and we often have a Topper and a Mirror dinghy racing against Westerly Fulmars, so anyone can take part.

In addition to these there are 4 longer all day races.

Red Sands Race which starts in the creek, out around the Montgomery wreck, around the Red Sands Towers, around Middle Sands beacon, around Spile buoy and back to the river finishing in Short Reach at the bottom of Stangate Creek.

Round the Island Race which starts in the creek and around the Isle of Sheppey. Competitors can circumnavigate the island whichever way they choose, but must pass out side Columbine Spit buoy at the entrance to the East Swale. The finish is in Short Reach at the bottom of Stangate Creek. Competitors should record their arrival and departure from Kingsferry bridge, and this time is deducted from the overall time.

Pursuit Race which starts in Short Reach at the bottom of Stangate Creek. All competitors are given a start time based on their PY number and a scratch time. The course is out of the River around the Montgomery Wreck, around the Mid Cant Beacon, around the Spile buoy, around the Montgomery wreck and finishing in Short Reach at the bottom of Stangate Creek. First boat home is the winner.

A recent addition is the River Race, that normally starts off Queenborough and around a mark determined on the day further up river and finishing in Short Reach at the bottom of Stangate Creek.
